Refusal of the Call

I've decided to leave. I just can't do it. I don't want to fight in this war that I hate. So, I'm going to run away to Canada. I'll be leaving shortly. I don't really know why I've decided to blog before I left because I should get going before anyone gets home. I've left my parents a note telling them goodbye. I don't think they'll understand though, especially my father. But, I can't stay here. I don't know what's happened to me. Something just snapped today at work. "...Standing in the pig line, I felt something break open in my chest. I don't know what it was. I'll never know. But, it was really, I know that much..." (46). So, I've got to leave now. I don't know when I'll be back.

  1. Refusal of the Call is the third stage in the hero journey. This is the time when the hero usually refuses to accept the journey. In this post O'Brien expresses his extreme oposition of going to the war. He decides to leave home and run away to Canada to avoid having to go. This part in the story represents Refusal of the Call because O'Brien tells readers that he did refuse his draft notice.
