Call to Adventure

Wow, it's been a while since I've posted. Guess I just forgot I had a blog until today.
Well, since my last post, a lot has happened. About a month ago, I graduated from College (Summa Cum Laud) and I'm back home for a while. I got a job at a meat packaging plant, which, let me tell you, is not one of the most glamorous things I've ever had to do. But, it gets me the money I need so I deal with it.
I've had a lot on my mind lately, because three days ago I received notification that I've been drafted to the Vietnam War. I don't know what to do. I just can't understand how this could happen to me, you know? This is going to sound pompous but I almost feel like this just isn't supposed to happen to people like me. Like I almost want to say I'm too... too good for this. I'm supposed to be above it. I'm a fraternity member and president of the student body. I've got a full ride scholarship to Harvard coming to me for grad school. This can't be happening. "There should be a law.... If you support a war, if you think it's worth the price, that's fine but you have to put your own precious fluids on the line" (42)

  1. The Call to Adventure is the second stage in the Hero Journey. This is when the hero is notified that he must perform a heroic action. In this post, O'Brien starts off by saying hello to his followers because things aren't urgent quite yet. He then explains that he has been drafted to war, which is his personal Call to Adventure because he is being asked to leave his ordinary world to defend the country.
