Crossing the Threshold

Today, Elroy and I went fishing on the Rainy River. It was quiet and peaceful, but a battle went on in my head. Canada was right there, just beyond the shore. I could have jumped out and left right then and there. I came so close. But, I just couldn't do it. So I began to cry. I'm pretty embarrassed to say that but, what would you have done? I didn't know what else I could do.  Elroy tried not to notice. He just continued fishing, allowing me to have some time to myself. What I realized is that leaving for Canada was just a fantasy. I couldn't risk the humiliation of not going. What would people think of me? What would my friends and family say? I tried to make myself do it, it was just impossible.  "I would go to the war-I would kill and maybe die-because I was embarrassed not to." (59)

  1. Crossing the Threshold is the fifth stage in the Hero Journey. This is the time when the Hero finally agrees and decides to answer his calling as hero and go on the journey. In this post, Tim explains his expirience as sat on the boat in the middle of the Rainy River, battling in his mind, weather or not to go to Canada. He decides to go to war because he is afraid of what people may think of him if he doesn't.
His calling is the war; he decides to go to war.

  2. Timmy! I can't believe you're going to war! I'm gonna miss you! You hate the war, I never thought you would end up going.
    Good Luck,
    Jenny
